Private Swimming Coaching in Borehamwood — Performance & Technique at The Venue
Not every swimmer needs to learn from scratch. Some already know how to swim — they just want to swim better.
The Venue in Borehamwood is where we work with those swimmers. Club athletes, triathletes, open water competitors, fitness swimmers who've plateaued and want to break through. If you can already swim 25 metres unassisted and you're looking for coaching that actually moves the needle, this is the right place.
The Pool
The Venue's pool is 25 metres — the same length as a standard competition pool. That matters if you're training for events, because your pacing, your turns and your stroke count all need to work in a full-length environment. A 10-metre pool is excellent for learning; a 25-metre pool is where technique gets refined under real conditions.
The water is maintained at 29°C — a temperature that supports sustained, serious training without the chill that can tighten muscles and affect performance. Backstroke flags are in place for turn precision, and dive blocks are available on request for start practice. Paid parking is available directly behind the facility, adjacent to the council offices.
How the Coaching Works
Sessions at The Venue are one-to-one, with exclusive lane access for the duration of your session. No other swimmers in your lane, no interruptions, no compromises on the coaching focus.
Your coach will assess your current technique from the outset — often in the first few lengths — and build the session around what you actually need rather than a generic programme. That might mean working through video analysis of your stroke, structured interval sets for speed and endurance, or detailed work on a specific technical weakness that's been costing you time.
Sessions run for one hour. Equipment — pull buoys, paddles, fins, bands — is used where it serves a purpose, not as a gimmick. Everything is in service of making you a measurably better swimmer.
What We Work On
Stroke technique. Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly — wherever inefficiency is costing you energy or speed, we find it and fix it. Small technical adjustments compound significantly over distance, and most swimmers are surprised how much time is sitting in their stroke mechanics waiting to be unlocked.
Turns and starts. Flip turns, open turns, dive starts — the transitions that separate good swimmers from fast ones. In a competition or triathlon, clean turns and a strong start are free speed. We work on them properly.
Speed and endurance. Structured interval training, pacing strategy and race-pace sets for swimmers who want to go faster over their target distance — whether that's a 400m pool event or a 3.8km Ironman swim.
Open water skills. Pool technique doesn't automatically transfer to open water. Sighting, drafting, buoy turns, dealing with chop and contact — if you're preparing for an open water event or triathlon, these need specific attention. We cover them all.
Fitness swimming. Not everyone training at The Venue is racing. Some are experienced swimmers who want to get faster, fitter, or more efficient for their own satisfaction. That's an equally valid goal and one we take just as seriously.
Who This is For
The Venue suits swimmers who are already competent in the water and want to improve. It's not a beginners' environment — the minimum level is being able to swim 25 metres unassisted — but within that, the range of goals and abilities we work with is wide.
Typical clients include club swimmers targeting regional or national competition, triathletes preparing for sprint, Olympic or Ironman distances, open water swimmers building for events from 1km to 10km, and fitness swimmers who want structured coaching rather than just doing lengths on their own.
If you're not sure whether your level is right for The Venue, just ask. We'd rather have that conversation upfront than have you arrive and find it's not the right fit.
Availability
Sessions at The Venue are available on weekdays, with limited slots to maintain quality and individual attention. Borehamwood is well located for clients coming from Hertfordshire, Elstree, Radlett, Bushey, Edgware and surrounding areas.
Because availability is limited and demand from serious training swimmers is consistent, it's worth getting in touch with reasonable notice if you have a specific schedule in mind.
Getting Started
If you'd like to discuss your goals and find out whether coaching at The Venue is the right fit, get in touch here. A brief conversation upfront — about your current level, your targets, and what's not working — means the first session can hit the ground running rather than spending time on assessment.
