How long does it take to learn how to swim? Around 20 hours is the most common answer. But no one can give you a straight answer for this question. Everyone is different and everyone has various fears, abilities and experience. If someone tells you it takes one hour, one week or one month to learn how to swim, they are wrong.
When my phone rings and someone asks “How long does it take to learn how to swim?” – I mentally reply “how long is a piece of string?”. It is difficult to give a straight answer to this question. As a teacher I would need to first see the person in the water, then I can make a quick guess – but no straight answer. If someone has fear of water, then they will take weeks, months or even longer to overcome their fear and get comfortable with water on their face. This takes time and patience. It can not be rushed.
There are those rare few, who have no experience with water, no fears, but take to the water like a fish! They respond to instruction well, and learn to swim pretty quickly. But they need to repeat these skills over and over to become competent swimmers. You can even do various land based exercises to build your water skills. If you want to feel comfortable in any water situation, then practice as much as humanly possible! The more time you spend in water the more you become adapted to this watery alien environment.
Children learn how to swim over the course of a few years. It can not be done overnight. Again, some children will take to it naturally and some children will need a little more time. The most important thing is not to push your child. Every lesson is progress, every moment spent in water is progress. So take the kids to play sessions, where they can learn how to move and splash about – get involved, play with your children. If you have fear of water, you could pass it to your children.
Adults can learn to swim much quicker, in my experience (if they have no fear of course!). The biggest problem with most adults is they have no patience! Everyone wants fast results. But your brain and body need to build up new skills which take time. How long did it take you to learn how to walk?
